Bioeconomy and Innovation: DICI Hosts the Italian National Final of BISC-E 2026
On 28 May 2026, the Department of Civil and Industrial Engineering (DICI) of the University of Pisa hosted the Italian national final of the Bio-based Innovation Student Challenge Europe (BISC-E) 2026, the European competition dedicated to innovative bioeconomy projects developed by undergraduate, master's and PhD students from Italian universities.
For the first time, the national final was held in a hybrid format and integrated with the Bioeconomy Day, promoted by the SPRING Cluster and organized by Prof. Renato Iannelli and Dr. Isabella Pecorini from the Department of Energy, Systems, Territory and Construction Engineering (DESTEC). The morning session focused on presentations and discussions of research activities carried out at the University of Pisa in the field of bioeconomy, a sector that is becoming increasingly strategic at both local and European levels in light of current economic and environmental challenges.
The BISC-E national competition took place in the afternoon thanks to a jury composed of representatives from industry and academia: Beatrice Mongili (Biosphere), Massimo Bregola (Cargill), Lorenzo Quatrale (Novamont), and Prof. Cinzia Pezzella from the University of Naples Federico II.
Participants and attendees particularly appreciated the keynote speech delivered by Alessandro Bruni, who shared valuable insights into innovation dynamics within companies and the path that leads from an initial idea to industrial implementation and market value creation.
At the end of the presentations, the jury, composed by Biosphere, Cargill, Novamont and University of Naples, announced the winners of the 2026 edition. Third place was awarded to Rifolium from the University of Naples Federico II, a project focused on converting local agro-industrial waste streams—including hemp, corn, citrus residues, and other non-edible plant by-products—into bio-based packaging materials. The team received a €250 prize, sponsored by the National Interuniversity Consortium of Materials Science and Technology (INSTM).
Second place went to BREWD, a project from the University of Naples Federico II that transforms spent grain and other brewing by-products into a high-value functional flour rich in protein and fiber. The team was awarded a €500 prize, sponsored by Biosphere.
The first prize was awarded to CRIOPURA, a project developed by students from the H2Ope multidisciplinary team of Universities of Bologna, Catania, Messina, and Rome. The project aims to develop a bio-based, regenerable, and tunable filtration material designed for the selective capture of pollutants. In addition to receiving the top prize of €1,000, sponsored by ENCO Consulting, INSTM, and the national BISC-E coordination team. CRIOPURA will represent Italy in the European phase of the competition.
The Italian national final of BISC-E 2026 was organized and coordinated by Prof. Maria-Beatrice Coltelli from the Department of Civil and Industrial Engineering of the University of Pisa and INSTM, further strengthening the University's role as a leading institution in promoting innovation, education, and entrepreneurship in the field of bioeconomy.
